The House

Peaceful stay in a hidden gem

Welcome to Le Manivert, a former hunting lodge built in 1795, in the midst of the French Revolution. The origin of the name remains a mystery: does it refer to a former owner named “Mani”, or to manoir vert — the green manor house? The old stones breathe history and we are merely passers-by who wish to honour the house by opening it to guests who want to stay for two or more nights.
The house is located on a dead-end road in the rolling hills of the Nièvre, in the heart of Burgundy. Surrounded by old trees, Le Manivert is an oasis of tranquillity, where you can hear only the rustling of the wind, the song of a nightingale or the call of a buzzard. Well aware of how privileged we are, we want to offer our guests a warm and unique stay.

About us
We come from the Antwerp area in northern Belgium and have been together for over thirty years. In addition to love, sorrow and two wonderful daughters, we also share a passion for the arts, including fine dining and making our guests feel at home. Our search for beauty with a twist here and there is also reflected in our interior design and the dishes we prepare for our guests.

While she inherited her love of cooking by tasting and smelling her father's pots, he learned about wine and obtained his Sommelier diploma. His challenge is to find fine, affordable, local wines that complement each of her dishes.

The department of Niévre is renowned for its forests and in the Morvan you will find them in abundance. You can go swimming, walking, cycling or just lie in the grass or under the trees and enjoy what is happening above your head. You may even see a shooting star in the clear night sky.

HISTORY

HISTORY

The Romans already knew: The Nièvre is a good place to be. Their traces can be found in Autun, which is further away, but also nearby, in Compierre. You can go for a walk in the woods between the remains of a Roman settlement. The entire region is bathed in the Middle Ages. A crusade once departed from Vézelay and the beautiful basilica contains the relics of Saint Magdalene. WWII is not far away because of the memorial sites for the fallen in the Maquis, where resistance groups hid. There are surprising discoveries to be made.

Can I book directly with you?

Yes, absolutely. You'll also receive a 6% discount on the advertised price if you do so. An email is all it takes. We'll then send you a contract with all the details regarding your stay and information about paying a deposit of 30% of the total price. After returning the signed contract and paying the deposit, your reservation becomes final.

Is late check-in possible?

No problem, but please let us know. At least 48 hours in advance.

Can I cancel free of charge?

This can be done up to fourteen days before arrival. We will then refund the deposit. Within those fourteen days you will lose the deposit.

Can we reserve a table for dinner upon arrival?

There are no fixed days on which we provide table d'hôtes. However, this can be arranged in consultation. If you wish to do so, please contact us at least 48 hours in advance. On Sundays, when the weather is nice, we sometimes organise an aperitif from 6 to 8 p.m. with drinks and dishes to share. Please enquire in advance.

Why minimum 2 nights?

There are two reasons for this. Our costs outweigh the benefits when booking for just one night. But above all, we want to welcome guests who want to discover this little-known region. One full day is enough to fall in love with it.
